Burlap Photo Frame Display (and Tutorial) – Joy in Our Home

Happy Monday Y’all!

Hope you all had a very nice weekend! I crossed lots off my to-do list and even got to put my feet up and relaxed yesterday! As Christmas approaches, I don’t want to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. I’m trying to get organized and get things done ahead of time so I can enjoy all that December has to offer!

As part of a group of some very fabulous Canadian bloggers, we are all sharing Handmade Christmas gift ideas today. My thoughts instantly turned to some kind of photo display idea.  I love picture frames and  I think you can never have too many. Today I’d like to show you how I made mine…

I absolutely love how these photo frames turned out and I think they’ll be such cute gifts! They’d be perfect for my mom (who can never have enough pictures of their grandkids), siblings, grandparents and even for teacher gifts!

Here are the materials I used:

– 2 pieces of 2X10 wood (my measurements were 9X6.5  and 9X5.5). You can make these in sizes you want, depending on the size of your picture!

– embellishments of your choice (I chose vintage-style keys from Michaels dollar bins)

– clip of your choice (I actually liked the style of the one with the notepad pictured above, so I just bought it from Michaels dollar bins too and removed the clip)

First, I used Rustoleum black spray paint and painted the wood blocks. I waited until they were dry before sanding them lightly. Sand wherever you want a distressed look. I then used my glue gun to glue a piece of burlap to the wood. Using screws, I attached the little clip to the wood! Such an easy and fun project!

I love the distressed look and the keys! I think I’m going to add some to the second frame as well!

Are you going to be making any gifts this Christmas? I hope you give these a try! Or if you’ve made some homemade gifts already, leave me a comment below please… I’d love to check them out!

Have a very wonderful week, friends! Thanks for coming by!

One Room Challenge, Week 3: Halfway Point of our Bathroom Makeover – Joy in Our Home

Hello friends!

I don’t know what it is about these ORC’s but I think time flies even faster when I’m doing one! I can’t believe it’s week 3 already! Just in case you’re new to my blog or you missed a couple posts, check out Week 1 and Week 2 here. We have 6 weeks to makeover a room in our house and although I chose one of the smallest rooms in our home, it’s still tricky to stay on track. And keep focused on the task at hand! If you know me, I like to start one million projects at the same time (but please, never tell my husband I just admitted that!)

Last week I shared the quickest and easiest way to remove linoleum and although this tile isn’t glued down yet, I wanted to give you a little sneak peak! I had to lay a few tiles down just so you can see! I love the contrast of the dark flooring against the white cabinets and bathtub.

There’s so much pretty inspiration for bathrooms in blogland and I’ve been pinning away like crazy on Pinterest! Here’s a great idea for storing towels from my sweet friend Jamie at Anderson + Grant. You’ll have to pop over to her blog to see how she made this “basket”. We definitely want to stay on budget with this makeover and I love the idea or reusing or repurposing an old item and making it into something pretty and function like Jamie did!

If I look at our to-do list, it sure doesn’t seem like I have much to cross off! However, with a week of spring break last week, a little get-a-away and then getting back to the routine of things, it’s set me back a little but I’m still happy with where we’re at. This week isn’t so much about the pictures, as it was all about unscrewing a bunch of fixtures… and then all that’s left is blank slates so that wouldn’t make for pretty pictures. Our medicine chest is gone and sold, the towel bars are gone, the cabinet hardware is gone and the light fixture is down.

There was a couple things that slowed us down… Once my husband removed the toilet, we noticed some of the subfloor had rotted. My handy husband removed and replaced it and now we’re ready to install our new tile flooring! Another little crazy thing we discovered… our bathroom sinks have no under-the-counter shut offs!? That is not normal, right?? We might just have to call our favorite plumber to install them! How crazy is that!

My agenda for this weekend is shopping… and I’m not complaining! Paint, a mirror, some accessories, etc. Please wish me luck that the items I’m looking for jump right off the shelf and into my cart!

I hope to share a much, much more productive post next week! Here’s the look we’re aiming for… I’m excited to finally start painting and begin to brighten things up!

Thank you so much for bearing with us… as we get all the groundwork done for this bathroom makeover and begin the pretty “stuff” now! Have a fabulous rest of the week, friends! Thanks for stopping by!

Hot Chocolate Mix Ornaments- Monthly DIY Challenge – Joy in Our Home

Good Morning Friends!

Hope you are all having a very wonderful week! If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might recall the monthly challenges some of my fabulous blogging friends and I do. There was the Great Crate Challenge, the Pumpkin Challenge, the Wood Slice Challenge and now…. drum roll…. the Clear Ornament Challenge!

The only rule we have is that we all start with the same “object”… in this case, it’s clear ornaments. And we let our imagination soar! And so let me introduce you to my “Hot Chocolate Mix Ornaments!”

I have to share a little background with you… You might have seen my Christmas Home Tour I posted on Monday. Well, it’s kept me very busy for the past few weeks. This past weekend as I was wrapping up my tour post, I also worked on my clear glass ornament and I had a MAJOR craft fail. Oh dear! But I’ve learned that these are just part of a diyer’s life. Insert: Clear Glass Ornament is now due. And who else, but my wonderful, supportive husband comes to my rescue! I really should have titled this post “What Would I Do Without Him?”

He came up with these adorable, little Hot Chocolate Mix Ornaments! All you need for these are:

– clear ornaments from Michaels in the shape of your choice (the wider the mouth, the easier they’ll be to fill and empty)

– hot chocolate powder (mine was a gourmet blend with chocolate bits)

– add-ins of your choice (marshmallows, chocolate chips, crushed peppermints, etc.)

– ribbon

Don’t you think they’re so darn cute?

With the hustle and bustle of the season, you might really love the simplicity of this ornament! We used a funnel to pour the hot chocolate into the ornament. Next, you layer in your ingredients until the ornament is full. The ribbon gives it a little extra Christmasy touch! They would look very cute attached to the ribbon of a gift or even attaching them to a Christmas card!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Please check out my wonderful blogging friends’ projects below, featuring clear ornaments! I’d also love to invite you to come back tomorrow for our weekly link up party, Your Turn To Shine!
