Easy DIY Floating Shelves Tutorial | Joy in Our Home

Hello everyone!

Remember our Bathroom Makeover Reveal we shared with you a few weeks ago? Just in case you missed it, you can check out the final reveal here. I promised you a tutorial for the floating shelves my amazing husband built and I’m here today to show you how you can make your own!

I love the extra storage these shelves give our bathroom… if you remember our “before” pictures, we had a medicine chest that held a ton of stuff and while it was totally practical, I wanted some open shelving. I love how these turned out!

For the pieces that mount on the wall, you will need:

  • (A) 2 – 23″ by 5 3/4″ pieces of MDF board. I got a big sheet of it from Home Depot back when I made our Chalkboard for our kitchen and I had lots leftover so these shelves didn’t cost a penny to make!
  • (B) 2 – 2″X 2″ that are each 23″ long
  • (C) 2 – 2″X 2″  for the side pieces that are 3 3/4″ long

First of all, we glued and then screwed piece B to piece C.  We put two screws in the back and then one on an angle from the inside to the outside.  Then we glued the thin MDF board to these supports and then used small finishing nails to nail the thin board onto the 2X2 supports.  Depending on how high you plan to mount the shelves, it is possible you will see the thin MDF board on the bottom so if you need to, fill any nail holes and sand smooth.  This now forms the base of the floating shelves and is the piece you will screw to the wall.

We painted the sides and the bottom of the thin MDF wood and then screwed the supports to the wall as you can see above.

Next, we worked on the actual shelves themselves.  For them, we used left over pine wood from when we built our coffee table.  Ours was 3/4 inch wood.

You will need:

  • 2 – 24 1/4 by 6 inch pieces of pine
  • 2 – 24 1/4 by 2 1/2 inch piece (for the front of the shelf)
  • 4 – 5 1/4 by 1 3/4 inch pieces (for the ends)

As shown in the picture above, glue the smaller pieces to your big piece of pine. We then used small nails to help secure the pieces together. We chose not to use an air nailer because the pine was too soft, but if you’d like to, go ahead (it just might mean more filling in holes).

Carefully fill all nail holes with wood filler. Once dry, sand and repeat if necessary. We then painted the shelves before we hung them on the wall.

Here you can see the bottom shelf “sitting” on the wall bracket that we built earlier. We were planning to screw the shelf to the wall bracket but opted not to as they sit pretty tightly. Our kids won’t be taking anything off these shelves and there’s no danger of them falling off. If you want, you can add a screw on each top to secure them to the brackets.

I

Here’s a quick little side-by-side of our bathroom. Don’t those shelves make a world of difference? I might just be getting my handy husband to make me some more!

Thank you for stopping by today and have a wonderful day!

The Perfect Gift for my DIY Husband | Joy in Our Home

If you’re looking for the perfect and unique gift for that special someone, check out the beautiful wood watches from JORD!

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by JORD Wood Watches.  All opinions and obsessions with wood watches are my own! You can read my full disclosure policy here.

Before you read any further, I have to tell you this isn’t my normal DIY post or tutorial of something I’ve made for our home. Rather, I’d love to share a beautiful and unique gift idea with you today… and to brag about my man just a little bit!

Let me backtrack a little bit with this post.  Just to give you an idea of why I chose a men’s watch instead of picking one for myself. (Although, now I seriously want one too!)

Last month, I shared in this post about some damage that happened in our home when we away on holidays. We’ve been out of our home ever since. And we will be for the next few months.

There are moments that have been hard and when we all miss our home. The saying “no place like home” has taken on a whole new meaning. Through it all, my husband has been our rock. On days when we have to go to our house to meet the adjustor or restoration manager or to just have a peek at the clean-up, I’ve come away so discouraged, wondering how our home would ever get restored. He has assured me a hundred times over, encouraged me and remained completely calm and stress-free (like he always does!!)

I know I am one blessed girl, but through this experience it’s just confirmed it all over again.

When JORD reached out to me, I immediately thought of my husband when it came to choosing a watch. He loves, loves watches and I won’t tell you how many he has. He wears them ever single day and often gets compliments from clients about his watches. However, the uniqueness of this JORD watch doesn’t really compare to the rest of his. As soon as I saw this one, I saw my husband’s name on it.He was SO happy and shocked when we surprised him with it! The craftsmanship of the watch is truly stunning!

This watch is perfect for casual attire like jeans and a t-shirt and yet it is such a sharp and classic accessory with dress pants, shirt and tie!

Be sure to check out their beautiful selection of men’s and womens’ watches! I have to say, that checking our mail has never been so fun! Especially when the watch comes packaged in a beautiful wooden box!

I am so excited that JORD has offered to give one of my lucky readers the chance to win a $75 e-credit towards a watch of your choice!! And anyone who enters will automatically be given a $20 e-code! Just click HERE for your chance to enter! Contest closes on Sept 20, 2016 at 11:59pm.

Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Currently {August} | Joy in Our Home

Hello friends!

It’s soo hard to believe we’re over halfway through August already and school will be starting in a week! As much as I love fall, I’m never excited for back to school.  I love having our little ones home and loving the rountine-less, lazy days of summer!

But, I’m sure if you ask me in a month’s time, I’ll enjoy being back to routine, the crisp cool mornings, fall baking, and all things pumpkin!

Last year I started sharing What’s Up posts as a fun way to share what I’m up to besides blogging. After reading my friends Kristi and Carrie’s Currently posts, I thought I’d start sharing again. If my DIY and recipe posts are what you enjoy, don’t worry, I’ll be back on Wednesday to share one of our favorite snacks this summer!

Wearing– I can’t wait to wear this scarf that I got a couple of weeks ago! It’s safe to say I wear a scarf almost daily come fall and winter and this one is soo incredibly soft I can just imagine how warm and cozy it’ll be once the weather starts getting chilly!

Happening lately– I often wonder if my readers are interested in the little bits of personal stories I share on my blog but many, many of you, my dear readers leave me very sweet comments and questions about our home so I thought I’d share a little more than I normally do…. A couple of weeks ago we headed to Montana for some holidays. We were going to be gone 2 weeks and on the second day we were gone, on a beautiful sunny day as we were enjoying the day around the pool with our friends, we got a call from home.

A pipe had broken on the 2nd storey of our home.

Water gushing out with the full force of a garden hose. Water running down walls all the way to the basement.

We were shocked to say the least, but it really didn’t prepare me as we came home the next day and drove up to our home and saw this huge industrial garbage bin and 3 restoration vehicles parked outside. We walked in through the front door to the loud roar of fans blowing, and our home a complete disarray.

I totally realize every last bit of it can and will be fixed and replaced. Yet, as I sit here and share this, tears come to my eyes because of this quote that I’m thinking of…

There really is no place like home.

So please bear with me, my sweet readers, as my building and crafting supplies have been packed away in preparation to install new flooring, drywall and paint. Don’t worry though, I’m still planning some fall projects to share with ya’ll. I’ll just have to get very creative in where I create…. Trying totally to take this one day at a time!

Using– I love this planner and I think the very best thing about it (besides staying super organized and having all my lists in one spot) are the darling little sticky notes and these colorful reminder stickers. I’m also super picky when it comes to pens and these colorful ones are absolutely perfect for planning! It’s such a happy place to plan out my weeks and months and I actually look forward to a planning session!

Favorite breakfast- I shared this Baked Oatmeal a while ago and it’s still one of our most favorite breakfasts. Especially with all the fresh peaches, nectarines, strawberries and all the other delicious summer fruit!

Planning for: We’ve been planning our 5th One Room Challenge that’ll take place in October and I am so excited to share which room we’ll tackle next. We had started planning the room we would renovate but because of the water damage, we had to make a change. In the past, we had done our Master Bedroom, Laundry Room, Main Bathroom, and our Daughter’s Bedroom and each of these rooms now have water damage. I’m excited to share the changes that’ll be coming to all of these!

I don’t want to fill this post with pictures of our mess but just in case you’re interested here is a view of our laundry room. Down to bare studs…. the tile is probably the hardest thing to remove so no wonder, they’re leaving it till the end. Here’s what it looked like a couple of weeks ago (plus, new tile flooring and white trim.)

Shopping for: If your little ones are heading back to school and you’re tired of packing a million little containers for their lunch, I have to share these Sistema ones that are the best ever! They hold a sandwhich or wrap, fruit, a tiny little container for dips and 2 more divided compartments for other food. You’ll thank me later! And if you’re like me and just maybe one of the little dip containers might go missing down the garburator, you might want some extra ones in all these cool colors.

Loving: We loved our week of camping in the mountains and it was the perfect getaway we needed! There is nothing that compares to fresh mountain air and being surrounded by God’s majestic creation all around you. We enjoyed some terrific hikes, wildlife sighing, kayaking, and of course, lots of yummy food!

This is one of my favorite hikes ever… the view at the top is stunning!

Thank you so much for stopping by today friends, and I hope you all have a very wonderful week!

Homemade Chocolate Chip Granola Bars | Joy in Our Home

A delicious and homemade granola bar that’s easy to whip together and chockfull of flavour!

As another school year quickly approaches, I feel like I have to force myself to start thinking about everything school related. Like early bedtimes. Eating breakfast at a normal hour. Snacks. Lunches. You know, routine. I’ve been especially thinking about snacks and what I send to school for our little ones. My goal this school year is to send homemade snacks as often as I possibly can. We usually succeed with this as the kids love veggies or muffins for recess snack but I have to admit once springtime rolled around, the granola bars started appearing in our grocery cart. I’m not sure if we, as moms, just start getting tired come April or if the kids start getting tired of the snacks we send them, but all of a sudden we stop in the granola bar aisle and they start jumping into our cart!

I really dislike filling our grocery cart with a bunch of store-bought treats. These past couple of years I’ve really started to watch the ingredients in boxes and the food we eat in general. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I could do a lot better, but I am happy we’ve come a long ways. As I was reading the ingredients on a box of granola bars I actually ran out of breath as there were soo many!

And then my auntie shows up on a family picnic with her homemade granola bars and I was hooked. No more bought ones for us! These are soo darn delicious, I promise you won’t be able to eat just one. Unless you have incredible self control! I love the chewy combination and it’s chockfull of flavor!

I’m planning on experimenting with the sugar and syrup in this recipe but thought I’d share it anyway! I’ll let you all know if I make a bit of a healthier version of these bars!!

Homemade Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

  1. 1 cup brown sugar
  2. 2/3 cup peanut butter
  3. 1/2 cup corn syrup
  4. 1/2 cup butter; softened
  5. 2 tsp. vanilla
  6. 1/2 cup coconut
  7. 1/2 cup raisins
  8. 2 tbsp. sesame seeds
  9. 1 cup chocolate chips
  10. 3 cups oats
  11. 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  12. 1/3 cup flax
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add first 5 ingredients.
  3. Stir well until combined.
  4. Add remaining ingredients.
  5. Mix until well blended.
  6. Line a 9X13″ baking pan and press granola into pan.
  7. Bake for 17-20 minutes.
  8. Cool and cut into bars.

Joy in Our Home http://www.joyinourhome.com/

After I cut the bars, I wrapped them individually in plastic and froze them. They were so handy to have all summer and just grab them from the freezer. Perfect for hikes, trips to the beach, and just for snacks!

Do you have any yummy ideas for school snacks? Let me know if you do; I’d love to try some new ones!
