My New DIY Coffee Table | Joy in Our Home

I am super-duper excited to share this project with you today!

I’ve been on the lookout for a coffee table since we moved into our home a few years ago. There were a few specifications… It had to have drawers (storage, storage, storage!), I wanted it two-tiered and it couldn’t be round.  So, when my husband asked me what I’d like for my birthday, I immediately answered “a coffee table!” After building our Master Bedroom Headboard, Living Room Fireplace and our Laundry Room Lockers, I knew he could build me a coffee table!

And I’m absolutely thrilled how it turned out! I first saw a similar one on Pinterest and fell in love with the style and all the drawers. The plans are from Ana White.

When it came time to paint the coffee table, my natural instinct was to stain it brown. Good ole’ safe brown! Trust me, there’s nothing wrong with brown but I’ve been trying to incorporate color into our living room and I thought I’d start with this piece! I used Country Chic chalk paint and love how it turned out!  I didn’t want anything too, too bold and love how these colors look together! The two colors I chose are Elegance and Simplicity! Check here for lots more colors and even some layered color samples! I loved working with this paint and will definitely be using it for future projects! I’ll be sharing the tutorial of how we painted it hopefully next week!

The beautiful hardware is from D. Lawless Hardware. If you’ve never checked out their site, you must! These antique brass cup pulls were $0.60 each! Usually when a piece of furniture needs 6-8 pieces of hardware, it can really add up! But, I am soo impressed with D. Lawless Hardware and the prices of their products! I love that you label each drawer! There’s my books in one, some kids books in another and some chargers in another! I didn’t take a picture of the other side but there’s actually 3 identical drawers on that side as well! See, what I mean about storage?

I’m so excited to create many vignettes on here, starting with some pretty spring décor!!

Have you ever used chalk paint…. or tried Country Chic chalkpaint? I’d love to know in the comments below!

I am so glad you stopped by today! I wouldn’t enjoy blogging half as much if it wasn’t for all my readers and the sweet and encouraging comments you leave! I read every single one and am so glad you take the time to stop by!

Have a lovely week, friends!

The Great Crate Challenge | Joy in Our Home

Good Morning Friends!

I have a super exciting project to share with y’all today! Nine of my talented blog friends and I  decided to do a project where we all start with the same basic “item” and all create something from it! I’m excited to check out each of these ladies’ blogs and see what amazing ideas they came up with!

As soon as we began talking about this project, ideas started swimming around in my head! Oh what to make?? For a bedroom, the living room, and I even thought about the garage or outdoors! Here is what I finally decided on…

As summer is drawing to a close, and my mind begins to wander to fall, I’m thinking of less busy and quieter days (ha! I think I’m fooling myself!!) Which brought me to the idea of this project. I love, love curling up on the couch with a good book and a throw blanket. Both of these often get left on the couch or sometimes even on the floor so I thought, what better place to store these in than a crate?? Totally practical and a little different than the usual basket or magazine rack.

First, I started out with one of these crates from Michaels. With a 40% coupon, they’re about $10. They are super sturdy and well built, too. I decided to paint ours with Americana DECOR chalk paint and the color I chose is Primitive. I gave it 2 coats and it went on so nicely!

I love numbers on different décor items and so naturally, I decided to add them to my crate!

It was super easy to stencil the letters and numbers on using a pencil and then I used a Sharpie to fill them in.

I also wanted to add wheels to the bottom, because we have hardwood floors and it would make it so easy to maneuver around. Our son (who loves, loves helping and working with little tools) fastened them on the bottom. Now his little mind is whirling with ideas of what toy or new “invention” he could add these little wheels to 😉

Here’s a recap of where I bought my supplies:

* Crate, chalk paint, stencil- Michaels

* Wheels- Home Depot

Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Have you ever made anything using a crate from Michaels? I’d love to hear what you created… I always appreciate your comments!
