Holiday Home Tour: A Cozy and Simple Christmas Tour | Joy in Our Home

 Happy Monday Friends!

I have something super exciting to share with you today!  I am so excited to announce I am hositng my first annual Holiday Home Tour! Myself and some wonderful blogging friends are opening our doors and sharing our homes with you this Christmas! So make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, a latte, coffee or whatever you’d like and get cozy!

Our home is not decorated extravagantly by any means, but it’s filled with a collection of things that we love and are special to us. It’s mostly décor that can be left up all winter… I love how cozy and warm it feels this time of year! Come on in and I’ll show you around!

We are so  glad you came! It’s a snowy and cold day in our neck of the woods so come on in and warm up…

Here’s what you see when you enter our home! Our foyer is very spacious which makes it perfect when we have a bunch of company! And especially this time of year when you have to stand at the door to take off your boots, winter coat, hats, mittens, etc! The bench pictured above is one of our favorite purchases ever! Aside from the amazing lockers that my husband just built for our Laundry Room, the seat of the bench also lifts up and it’s sectioned off with winter gear for the boys or girls!

First, we need to warm up! Our Hot Chocolate Station is ready so lets go into the kitchen…

Our kids think this is thee BEST idea ever! They love coming in from the cold and loading up their hot chocolate with all these fancy goodies…

Our kitchen, dining area and living room are one big open area… which we love and this area is definitely the hub of our home!

We can’t wait to enjoy Christmas dinner around this table… After 12 years of travelling winter roads to go “home” for Christmas, we are so, so excited to have my parents, sisters and their families coming to our home for the holidays!

I love the combination of simple and rustic for our dining room table! I love anything burlap and when I saw these little burlap bags from Michael’s I knew they’d be perfect to hold the cutlery! Fresh evergreen branches make such an easy centerpiece!

I used fresh cranberries for super easy candle holders and I couldn’t help but use my little succulent plants at each place setting!

Let’s make our way into the living room and I’ll show you a few of my favorite things in here…

I couldn’t really get a full shot of the living room because if you look super close you will see our coffee table isn’t quite “finished” yet! Someone has a birthday coming up any day and all she wished for was that her amazing, wonderful husband build her a coffee table. So, here we are waiting for some paint that we ordered! I love it already and have it sitting unfinished in our living room! I snuck a Christmas house and some accessories from our little ones and I love how they look on my Chalkboard Wood Slice.

I have loved snow globes ever since I was a little girl… and here are a couple of my favorites that I’ve collected. Our son chose the red one for me last year and our daughter chose the white one pictured below.

This pretty lantern and fluffy friend adorn the base of our fireplace… love the cozy feel they bring to our living room!

Even our bedroom got a little touch of red and green! I love this yarn ball wreath and think it looks perfect against our headboard.

There’s a couple of Christmas books waiting to be read…

One more thing I’d love to show you before you run off… my Lemax Village collection. I remember as a little girl looking through the Sears Wishbook catalogue and wishing for a little village of houses and accessories. After I got married, I began receiving them as birthday gifts and they are all so special to me! The Walton’s one pictured above left has a very special meaning to me … when our son was around 18 months old, my dad took him for a walk. They stumbled upon a garage sale and he spotted this Waltons’ store. He called out “Mama!” as soon as he saw it. The house was marked $1 and Dad only had $0.75 in his pocket but the lady selling it had no problem letting it go for $0.75 after she heard that our son wanted it for Mommy! I’ll always treasure it!

Thank you so much for spending this time “in our home”! But, it doesn’t stop here! Check out the sneak peek of homes that are on this tour this week! Please hop on over and visit my blogging friends’ homes that are being shared today!

Stay warm and hope you have a very wonderful week!

Laundry Room Reveal | Joy in Our Home

Happy Monday Everyone! It’s the beginning of a new week and the perfect time to share something exciting!

Our Laundry Room is 98% done but I want to share it with you anyway! This post will be mostly pictures… so I’ll let the pictures do most of the “talking”.

Every reveal or makeover needs some after pictures, right? Just to see how far you’ve come and realize all that hard work totally paid off. Here is our frightful  seriously neglected “before” picture of our laundry room. What a scary sight!

I am absolutely thrilled with the lockers… a pure labour of love from my amazing husband! Just so ya’ll know, when we bought our home, my husband had next to no carpentery skills. He’d like to tell you he still doesn’t, but that’s not true! We’ve he’s totally remodeled our basement and did a partial kitchen makeover. And now this! I could keep raving, but just walking into our laundry room now makes me appreciate him so, so much more!

The drawers at the bottom are very deep and spacious and can hold many shoes. They are on rollers and are perfect for our little ones to store their shoes in. We have a pretty good routine going already…. after school, jackets and backpacks immediately get hung! This mama loves it!

Another feature I love are these baskets! They hold everything from light bulbs, to mop head replacements to summer items. It’ll be so handy to have sunscreen, mosquito spray, water balloons, sun glasses and cases, and so much more all in one handy spot!

The middle cupboard is actually one of the original brown cupboards. My husband removed them both (as you can see in the before pictures) and then rehung one in the middle. We repainted the doors white and he built the shelves on either side. I love how they turned out!

The laundry printable can be found on my friend Aniko’s blog Place of My Taste. So fun to have some space to display some pretty things in the laundry room now!

Something else I really like (the not so pretty side) is this behind the door broom/Swiffer organizer! They used to just stand anywhere and everywhere but this hanger is perfect now to keep them off the floor and out of sight!

And one last picture, before I let you go! I’m so happy how it all turned out! Now, all that’s left is the flooring (it’ll get changed this winter along with the rest of our main floor) and the baseboards! But that’s pretty minor considering all that we’ve accomplished in this room!

I’m so happy you stopped by today! I hope you have a very wonderful day and don’t forget to check out my Pretty Pearl Ornament that I did as party of a Handmade Ornament Blog Hop! There’s lots of inspiration and some very creative ornaments that I know you’ll enjoy!

Wood Slice Challenge | Joy in Our Home

I’m so excited to share with you all our November challenge…. the great and fabulous wood slice challenge! Twelve of my fabulous blogging friends and I do a monthly challenge where we all take the same item and see where creativity leads us! The past couple of months we’ve done crates and pumpkins if you want to check them out!

I woke up extra early today so that I could sit down in front of the fireplace with a cup of tea and read my friend’s wood slice projects! And I’m telling you, there’re all so great! Please be sure to visit them at the links below and leave them a little comment love!

Now on to mine…

Mine is super simple but I love how it turned out! It has a couple of different purposes and I’m excited to display it on our coffee table amidst a Christmasy vignette. I started off with a wood slice from Michaels. I bought the oval shaped one and with a coupon it was about $10. You can find it here.

The first thing I did was, using a pencil, I drew a line close to the edge of my wood slice. I preferred not to paint all the way to the edges, but if you want, you could take your paint all the way to where the brown begins! It’s totally preference!

I used my trustworthy Frogtape from Home Depot and taped along the edges. I used FolkArt Chalkboard paint and gave the slice 2 coats. I made sure to let the final coat dry overnight before I wrote or set anything on it.

When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of one day owning some Christmas villages! The houses and accessories I’ve collected over the past few years are one of my most treasured décor items. I’ve always displayed them up high but this year I want to keep them down low where they can be enjoyed more! This wood slice is the perfect spot to display some of them!

I loved using the slice as a sign as well… I have a few places in mind where I’ll use it this Christmas. I think it would look beautiful on our fireplace mantle or even on the dining room table!

Have you started crafting for Christmas yet? I’d love to check out what you’ve made! Please leave me a comment below and I’ll be sure to visit your blog! Also, we’d love for you to link up any of your projects to our link party, Your Turn To Shine!

Thanks so much for visiting! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and have fun checking out the rest of the wood slice projects below!

Dollar Store Apothecary Jars: Monthly DIY Challenge | Joy in Our Home

Hello Everyone!

Hope ya’ll had a great Easter weekend! Ours was wonderful…. my parents came Thursday and we loved having them here! I always find the weekend flies by sooo fast… and before we know it, it’s mid-week again!

So, here we are at another Monthly DIY Challenge! This is a challenge where some of my blogging friends and I all take the same item and create something with it… or in this month’s case, we all took something from the same store! This time around, we did a Dollar Store Challenge! And here’s what I created….

If you’re anything like me, you love the Dollar Store, right?? Our kids love going there and usually it’s an up-and-down-every-aisle kind of visit. This was such a fun challenge and I’m sure you’ll be amazed at what my friends came up with! At the end of my post you’ll see 11 more awesome creations, all made with items from the Dollar Store! Here’s a little sneak peek…

I’ve been crushing on apothecary jars for quite some time now! I see them everywhere on Pinterest and because I didn’t want to spend $15-$25 on one, I decided to make my own! I absolutely love how it turned out…. and I can gauarentee it, I will be making more! In different shapes and sizes!

Here’s what I used and how I made it…

This size of jar was $2 and came in different sizes but since I wanted mine for cupcake liners, this was the shape I chose. You can find them with all the other kitchen ware. I believe they’re for storing rice, spaghetti and other dry goods in. I also bought a candle stick holder for $1. I’m sure my favorite Thrift store has a hundred lots of these, so I’ll be checking there for more! The glass hardware was leftover from when I redid our dresser and end tables.

All you’ll need is your trustworthy glue gun to make these! I glued the little glass knob onto the jar and then glued the jar onto the candlestick! Easy peasy, huh? I thought about painting the lid and the candlestick and distressing it, but then decided not to. I’m thinking for the kitchen, I’m loving the clear glass look!

I’ll just share a couple more pictures… sorry for the overload! I’m a little amazed still at how super easy these were to make, but how pretty it is!!

I found these cute cupcake liners at Michaels!

And now here are my friends’ creations… be sure to pop on over to their blogs and leave them some comment love!

Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!
