An Outdoor Mother’s Day Tablescape {and Gift Ideas for Mom} | Joy in Our Home

Creating a tablescape for Mother’s Day can be easy and very affordablel! I’m sharing 5 easy steps on how to create your own, along with other stunning inspiration from blogging friends!

This post is sponsored and contains affiliate links. For my full disclosure, click here. (If you make any purchases by clicking on the links in my blog post, you’ll never pay a penny more! You’ll just help support my blog by the small commission I make 🙂

Today I’m excited to be part of a group of fabulously talented ladies to show you some Mother’s Day Tablescape ideas. Be sure to check out all the other beautiful tablescapes at the end of my post… so many gorgeous ideas!

Do you have any plans for Mother’s Day yet? It seems like the older I get, I just want a day at home spent with my loved ones. Nothing fancy and crazy expensive.

Personally, I think eating on out holidays is overrated. 😉 I’d rather avoid the busy and (and often loud) restraunts and enjoy a meal at home. As a family, we love making our favorite meals at home and setting a beautiful table can be so easy! I’ll show you how I created a Mother’s Day inspired tablesape outdoors!

Even if creating a tablescape isn’t something you do very often, I want to encourage you to give it a try! It’s really not as difficult as it may seem! I’ll show you in 5 simple steps!

  1. You first need to choose a base. I love picnics on a blanket but to dress it up a little bit, I decided to use some pallets to give it that rustic style I adore. There’s so many places that have them sitting outside for free pickup and thought they’d make a unique setting!
  2. Next,  instead of using a tablecloth I used a piece of lace because I wanted to keep the rustic look of the wood mainly visible. I placed the lace down the center and I think it gives it such a pretty feminine touch! Instead of buying new, check yardsales or thrift stores for pieces of lace.
  3. Next choose a tray to use as your centerpiece. I used a couple of different ones just to give you an idea. The ivory one an be found at Ikea and the tobacco basket is one of my favorite décor items ever! You can get your own here.
  4. I then added some of my favorite Ikea greenery in the trays and added a couple vases of carnations. You can use any flowers that are in season from your local grocery store or if you have some blooming in your yard already, that’s even better! These carnations have lasted over four weeks and still look so pretty! I love their soft pink color! I also added a couple of candles on the sides because I think candles are the perfect touch to any decor! I recently bought these battery operated flameless ones and absolutely love them. You can find some similar to mine here.
  5. Lastly, I added some of my favorite cloth napkins and our everyday dinnerware dishes. The glasses are a new purchase this spring and I think they add the perfect touch of color.

Of course, with Mother’s Day around the corner, there’s always the question of the perfect gift to get Mom! There’s nothing I treasure more than my children’s homemade gifts and cards but of course, their daddy is a pretty amazing guy who always goes shopping with them and buys me a couple thoughtful gifts. I thought I’d share 5 of these ideas as well.

Fossil 3-Hand Watch | Saje Pocket Farmacy Oil Blend Set | Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelet | White Birkenstock Sandals | Together Sign

  • I’m picky when it comes to watches but I think this pretty Fossil watch is one of my absolute favorites!
  • I absolutely love the Saje Pocket Farmacy and it is with me wherever I go! The Peppermint Halo oil is an essential for headaches and is my life saver!
  • If you wear jewlery, you’ll love this pretty bracelet to diffuse your oils and have them with you throughout the day!
  • Birkenstocks. Enough said. My go-to favorite sandals all summer long. They might be a few dollars more than those cheap flip flops, but trust me, your feet will thank you!
  • I love this pretty farmhouse sign and it totally speaks about my love for my family!

Now enjoy checking out the rest of the pretty tablescapes, friends!

Southwest Chicken Wraps | Joy in Our Home

These delicious wraps are easy to make and I love how you can substitute or add any of your family’s favorite ingredients!

It’s about time I share these delicious wraps with you! They’ve been a family favorite for a couple of years now and each time I make them I think that I need to share them with you all!

They are definitely one of those recipes that appear in our menu a couple times a month. It’s quick and my husband and kids love them. I’ve even served them to company and they’ve always gotten rave reviews.

There’s a million reason my family loves these wraps. I love them because I can make them in less than half and hour (by planning ahead of course). I usually put these on the menu after I make a roasted chicken because the leftovers are perfect for these. Our kids love them as well and whenever they gobble up something quickly it’s a winner in my books.

Another reason these are so delicious is because you can make them to suit your family’s taste. If you don’t like beans, leave them out. If you love green chilies or hot peppers, add them. You could even substitute a different meat if you have other leftovers. Don’t be afraid to experiment with other ingredients!

  1. 1 cup cooked rice, warm or at room temperature
  2. 1/2 tablespoon chili powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  4. 1 tbstp taco seasoning
  5. 1-2 cups cooked, shredded chicken
  6. 1 cup black beans (I used dried beans and cook them the day before)
  7. 1 green onion, finely sliced
  8. 1/2 red or green bell pepper, diced
  9. juice of 1 lime (about a tablespoon)
  10. 2 cups shredded cheese (I use marble)
  11. Sour cream and salsa (optional)
  12. 6 burrito-sized flour tortilla shells
  1. In a large bowl, add the rice, chili powder and garlic powder. Stir to combine.
  2. Add chicken, black beans, green onions, bell peppers and lime juice. Mix. Add salt and pepper to taste, if needed.
  3. Sprinkle cheese over tortillas, leaving 1/2-inch border around edges, then arrange chicken and rice mixture down the center of each tortilla.
  4. Optional- I like to add salsa over the chicken and rice mixture down the center.
  5. Fold one side of the tortilla over the filling, followed by the other side. Press lightly to flatten.
  6. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and place wraps on skilled for 1 minute or until lightly browned on both sides.
  7. Serve with sour cream, salsa, or other toppings of your choice.

Joy in Our Home http://www.joyinourhome.com/ Recipe adapted from Mel’s Kitchen Café

Last time I made these I put them in the oven on a very low temperature and everyone loved how they got a little crispy. Usually I just make one for each of us and keep them in a covered dish so they stay warm but I’m thinking from now on I’ll make them crispy! So delicious!

Let me know if you try these, friends and thanks for stopping by today! Enjoy your weekend lots!

Hall Table Makeover | Joy in Our Home

Hello friends!
Hope you all had a great weekend! We are definitely counting down the hours days to summer holidays! Ask our kids (and mommy!) any day of the week and we’ll tell you exactly how many days left till summer holidays! We can’t wait for two months of no routine! Yes, we’re just a little excited!

I have lots of summer projects planned… our garage is becoming quite the collection of garage sale and thrift store finds that I want to redo during the summer. I got a head start though with this table… let me show you!

When I saw this table at a garage sale I knew I had to have it. Do you ever almost lunge or run when you see something in a thrift store or garage sale, knowing it has YOUR name written on it? I try to do it very discreetly but I’m afraid, sometimes I just get a little bit excited. I loved the size of this table and knew it could be so pretty in a new color!!

I used my favorite chalk paint, Country Chic paint for this makeover. I love that you don’t have to sand every little nook and cranny off… after a wipe down, you can start painting!

I gave the table a quick wipe down, and then sanded the top. It had some bubbles on the top from water damage but a light sanding did the trick. I gave it two coats of Country Chic Vanilla Frosting. After letting it dry completely, I applied clear wax using a circular motion. I immediately wiped it off using straight swipes. Once wiped off, I used 80 grit sandpaper and gently distressed in areas that would normally receive wear. Next, I applied a coat of antique wax using the same technique as the clear wax. I made sure to rub it into all the corners and crevises and especially the lines that the sandpaper made. Using a clean, dry cloth, I wiped off the wax, leaving on just the right amount for that antique look. I find this technique so quick and easy and the perfect way to give it that worn look that I love!

I love the texture that the grittier sandpaper gave this table. Once it was completely dry I gave it a coat of Tough Coat which helps protect the surface. You just never know what I might set on it when my hands are full, coming into the house! Tough Coat protects it soo well!

I’m so happy the way this table turned out! Originally I was going to sell it once I gave it a makeover, but I think it’s found a home by our garage entry way!

Have you done any furniture makeovers lately? Please leave me a comment below and I’d love to check them out!

Also, be sure to come back Thursday because I have a deeeelious dessert I’ll be sharing! I was really thinking these Chocolate Rhubarb Brownies were the cream of the crop dessert but seriously, you have to see the one I’ll be sharing soon!

Thanks for coming by today! And if you’d like, I’d love for you to foll0w along on  Instagram and Facebook  to keep up with all that’s happening on the blog! I love pinning all sorts of inspiration over on Pinterest too! Come say hello over there!

Simple Christmas Tree Update with a HomeRight Sprayer | Joy in Our Home

A quick and inexpensive update to Christmas trees using a HomeRight sprayer and paint.

This post contains affiliate links. Please note, if you buy anything through the links, you never ever pay a penny more! You’re just helping support my little blog 🙂 For my full disclosure, click here.

If you’ve read my blog for a while you know how much I love finding pieces that need some TLC and giving them new life. (And if this is your first time here, welcome! I’m SO glad you stopped by 🙂 )

When I stumbled upon these trees at a garage sale I didn’t give them a second thought. I knew right away they were coming home with me and I could spruce them up (pardon the pun!)

You know sometimes something is so ugly that it’s actually cute? That’s what I thought of these trees. I liked their size and shape but really, they were so droopy looking and loaded down with a gazillion pinecones. They kinda reminded me of a Charlie Brown tree.

I knew two of my very favorite tools I’ve used for many DIYs would come in handy when giving these guys a makeover. I used my HomeRights Small Spray Shelter and if you’ve never heard of these, you really need to check them out here. It’s basically a pop up tent that you use for painting. After unzipping the bag you store it in, it just pops up on its own and is perfect for painting things in your garage and you’ll never have to worry about getting paint on your vehicles, floor or anywhere else. I used to use cardboard boxes to paint in but this is SO much handier and way better for the environment too! This tent measures 39″ tall by 35″ wide and 30″ deep and is perfect for so many painting projects. I actually set it up outside this time and even though there was a little wind, the tent is the perfect shelter for your project and it took only minutes to finish!

Now can we talk about the Finish Max Paint Sprayer ? This sprayer has gotten so much use that I think we might have to get a new one soon. The first project I ever used it for was painting our front door and we’ve been hooked ever since. It sprays evenly and the thing that impresses me most is the amount of paint it uses. A little really does go a long way!

So onto updating these trees…

The first thing I did was give them a good dusting and then using some wire shears, I clipped off all the pine cones (and kept them for another project coming soon).  It was hard to get a good ‘before’ picture but in the above one you can see the gold/green finish it had. Very dull and it needed some life to it.

The instructions for the sprayer are easy to follow along and it’s very user friendly! I sprayed both trees using some green paint I picked up at Home Depot and let them dry. Before cleaning out the sprayer I gave it another light coat just to make sure it was covered evenly and that’s it!

Since flocked trees are my favorite, I used some Sno Blower to give them the look of a snowy tree. I kinda wish we had some real snow when photographing them but our weather is so beautiful right now that I’m just going to savor this weather and the snow will come soon enough!

I’m so happy with the fresh new look of these little guys and a huge thanks to HomeRights for amazing products that are so easy to recommend to my readers!

Thank you for stopping by today friends! Have you bought any seasonal decor or done any Christmas crafts yet? It’s never to early to start! 😉

Enjoy your weekend friends… it’s a busy one for us here!

How To Make the Easiest Fall Wreath | Joy in Our Home

Think outside the box when making wreaths! These adorable little wreaths are easily made using a garland!

This post contains affiliate links. Please note, if you buy anything through the links, you never ever pay a penny more! You’re just helping support my little blog 🙂 For my full disclosure, click here.

The calendar says it’s officially fall and it’s time to share my first fall post of the season! The weather has been so cold this month and it’s felt like fall for while!

A few of my blogging friend (thanks to Jen from Noting Grace) and I are sharing some fall (and other home décor) DIYs’ today! There’s an assortment of beautiful things you can create and be sure to check them all out at the end of my post! If you’re stopping by from Amy at Cuter Tudor, welcome! Aren’t those little succulents absolutely adorable in her pumpkins!?

I’m sharing a very simple DIY. Sometimes, some crafts or DIYs are so easy that you feel they’re not worth sharing.  But I know from the past that my readers enjoy simple diy’s, like this farmhouse banner or this super easy way to update Christmas decor, and so therefore I’m sharing these darling little wreaths today!

It all started when I bought some tobacco baskets and wanted a couple little wreaths for the inside of them. I found ones I really liked at Joanne’s but I didn’t want to spend $16 so I thought I’d wait and see what I could make.

Last year I found this garland at the thrift store and I used it on our piano in our fall home tour. This year when I decorated for fall I didn’t really have a place for it and before tucking it back into my storage containers I realized I could make mini wreaths from it.

I wound the garland in a circle with a width of 8″ and using my favorite wire crafting cutters I cut the garland. Since the garland is wire, I just twisted the ends together and that was it! Too easy, right!?

So next time you see a garland at the thrift store or even on clearance in a month or so, remember they can be made into mini wreaths!

Be sure to head over to Areeba from Mint Candy Designs and see her beautiful bed tray! I’d love to make my own!

Thanks so much for stopping by today friends and I’ll be back Friday for a peek at our fall home decor!!

Monthly DIY Challenge: How to Add a Lace Accent Wall (Using a Stencil) | Joy in Our Home

Hello friends!

It’s one of my favorite times of the month — the second Wednesday of each month I team up with a bunch of my blogging friends for a fun challenge! Each time, we begin with the same theme or item and it’s so fun to see what each of us comes up with!

This month, I am so excited to be working with Royal Design Stencils  and using one of their stencils on any surface in our home! Thanks so much to Royal Design for sponsoring us this month!! All opinions about these amazing stencils are all my own!

I could not be happier with my first ever attempt at stenciling and how it turned out!!!

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my full disclosure here.

Ever since completing our One Room Challenge last month, I’ve been trying to decide which room we’ll take on in the fall. And this room totally ran through my mind as one of my options but I quickly thought “why wait till then??” Why not start updating it now!?

So, when the opportunity arose to work with Royal Design Stencils our guest bedroom instantly came to mind! I knew right away that a stencil design on the main wall would look beautiful! The only hard part was choosing which design… there are soo many beautiful choices I wondered how I’d ever be able to narrow it down to one! I finally decided on the Spanish Lace Wall Stencil and I’m so glad I went with it!

Here’s what our guest bedroom looked like before…

We painted our basement a few years ago when beige was the whole cheese!! I cannot begin to tell you how bright and pretty it looks now that we painted it a very, very light grey! I’m also in the process of repainting those end tables and will share them soon!

Here’s what I used to make a “Lace Stenciled Wall”:

  • paint (for the background wall)
  • paint for the accent color (I used white)
  • Spanish Lace stencil
  • full sized roller and small sized roller

That’s it! No fancy, shmancy items that you’ll never use again! The first thing I did was the normal painting prep work… remove all plug in and light switch covers and cover any flooring or furniture from paint splatters that may occur. Using a full sized roller, I painted the walls two coats of light grey. After they were dry, the stenciling begins!

I think one of the biggest questions about stenciling a full wall is where to begin? That will depend on your stencil design and length of wall. We chose to start at the top of the ceiling and work our way to both sides. I used my favorite Frog Tape  to hold my stencil in place. Using a small sized roller, roll it in paint in your tray but then roll all the access paint off. Do this until you have barely any paint left on your roller. That’ll be the perfect amount then! I then rolled from top to bottom and side to side onto my stencil. I immediately removed the stencil, added new tape and attached to the wall again. I won’t include directions here about how to line the stencil up because those directions are included when you purchase your stencil and they worked great!

Once you get the hang of it, it moves along quickly!

The wall on the right of the picture wasn’t going to be stenciled so I used newspapers to cover it from splatters. It also works great because as you get close to the corner you can curl the stencil into the corner and onto the newspaper and not worry about getting your wall messy!

From start to finish the stenciling took two hours to complete! To be honest, I was very nervous before starting but now I want to stencil another wall in our home!! I love how it turned out!!

It was soo fun to see all the amazing stenciling projects that my friends came up with! From walls to furniture and everything in between, you’ve got to check them out! Just follow the links below to each of their sites!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

The Stress Free Way to Painting Doors | Joy in Our Home

With the help of a couple of handy tools, painting projects like doors can become so much easier!

This post contains affiliate links. Please note, if you buy anything through the links, you never ever pay a penny more! You’re just helping support my little blog 🙂 For my full disclosure, click here.

Do you enjoy crossing things of your to-do list? There is something SO darn satisfying about making that line through something that needed done.

Like painting the doors in our home. There are 20-some of them and they all needed painting. They’ve been staring in our faces and while I tried to ignore them, I knew they weren’t going anywhere so my husband and I got out our trustworthy HomeRight large spray shelter and got to work.

And really friends, why do we put off things that aren’t so hard after all? I think more than anything it’s just the thought of painting 20-some doors that was making us procrastinate!

Before I start chatting about painting the doors, let me first tell you about our spray shelter. We first used it two summers ago when we painted our front door and we’ve used it for so many projects around our home since. Last week I shared how I gave these old and frumpy Christmas trees an update with our smaller spray shelter but today I’ll chat a little bit more about the larger tent.

This spray shelter is perfect for painting larger pieces like doors, dressers, tables and any larger piece. The tent measures 9 feet wide by 6 feet deep and 5 1/2 feet high. We mainly use it in our garage but in the summer we’ve set it up outside and it even has a mesh screen that you can use to keep out bugs, leaves or anything else the wind might blow your way 🙂

It takes a few minutes longer to set up than the smaller pop up tent but worth every minute. One person can set it up on their own but if you set it up with two people it takes maybe 5-6 minutes.

So last week my husband set up our spray shelter and we got busy. I keep tablecloths from the dollar store on hand to cover the floor. You’ll notice in the picture the floor isn’t completely covered but one of the things we love most about the sprayer is that it has very little over spray. The nozzle is adjustable and perfect to contain the spraying.

We chose the Winslow door by Masonite. We really liked the style of these doors and feel they suit our modern farmhouse style. They come primed so they haven’t really stuck out too, too much (they’ve been hung for over a year).  But once they’re painted it’s amazing how white they really look!

After setting the tent up, I gave the doors a quick wipe down and then my husband laid the door on his adjustable sawhorses. We used Behr’s Door & Trim paint and gave the doors two coats of paint for each side. Once they were somewhat dry (but not completely ready for another coat) we carefully set them in a safe spot to dry completely and started on another door.

It feels like such a huge project has been lifted off our shoulders!!

A big thank you to HomeRight for sponsoring this post and for their amazing products that make doing projects around our home SO much easier!!!

Thanks for stopping by again and now it’s time to start sharing all things Christmasy!!

Cherry Hand Pies Recipe with Breville | Joy in Our Home

Hand pies stuffed with your favorite filling are a delicious summery treats for on-the-go snacking!

This post is sponsored and contains affiliate links. For my full disclosure, click here.

There’s something about certain foods that take me right back to my childhood. Pies is one of those foods. I grew up enjoying homemade pies and to this day, they are one of my very favorite desserts.

Before I go into the details of these cute lil’ pies, I’d love to share a little bit more about my new favorite appliance. The Breville Smart Oven Air has been the best addition to our kitchen. Our weather can so hot in the summer and most of the time it doesn’t cool off at night. Often times, I don’t like turning on our big oven as it heats up the house so much. Well, with the Breville Smart Oven Air, I certainly don’t have to worry about that anymore. I can’t believe the difference a convection feature makes!

Here are some of the features I like most about this oven:

  • Saves energy and the super convection setting reduces cooking time by up to 30%.
  • The 1 cubic foot interior has room for roasting a 14-lb turkey, fitting a 12 cup muffin trays,  9X13″ baking pan or 9 pieces of toast.
  • The oven is convection powered and has an inbuilt fan that circulates the hot air within the oven.
  • It has 13 cooking functions that include dehydrating, roasting, airfry, baking, reheat, cookies and so many more! Perfect for all your cooking needs!

I find this oven so incredibly convenient for reheating food and making quick lunches like nachos or pizzas. Those are some of our kids’ favorite summer lunches and they both only take about 5 minutes to bake in the oven! More time in the sun so it’s definately a win-win for us! I can’t wait to use it to cook all of our family’s favorite meals!

Joy in Our Home http://www.joyinourhome.com/ The kids begged to try one as soon as they came out of the oven and normally I’d let them dive in but this was an hour before supper and I didn’t want to spoil their appetites so we all had to wait.

And they were well worth the wait. So delicious!

A huge thank you to Breville Canada for sponsoring this post! If you’d like to see more of their products like coffee machines, waffle makes, cookers and of course, ovens, be sure to check Breville and see all the amazing features of these products!

$100 Room Challenge: Finishing the Laundry Room | Joy in Our Home

Follow along this month as I show you how we’re putting the finishing touches on our laundry room with the $100 Room Challenge!

I’ve gone back and forth about twenty times on whether or not I should publish this post.

I’ve told myself a hundred times that I don’t have time to do this in January. My husband doesn’t have time to build shelves. $100 isn’t enough.

And today I told myself, I will make time, my husband always comes through for me on any project or deadline and if there’s anyone who can make a dollar stretch, it’s me. I’m not bragging when I say this but I can make a dollar go an awful long way. And this challenge gives me one hundred of them so I decided to jump on board. Erin, our host from Lemons, Lavender and Laundry will be so proud I finally joined…. even though I’m a week late!

Let me back track a bit…. You might be wondering what the $100 Room Challenge is and if you’ve never heard about it you can read all about how it started here. Basically you can only spend $100 and you have one month to complete a space in your home.

Our laundry room has been STARING at me and begging to complete it and honestly, there’s no better time to put the finishing touches on it than in January. You see, this room got completed a few years back when we had water damage that completely destroyed it. It was down to bare studs in here.

Let me give you a little tour of our laundry room/mudroom… Messy, right? But there’s also no cupboards or shelves to hold all the laundry things, right?! There used to be some big cupboards overtop of the washer and dryer but they were all ruined and we’ve never replaced them. I haven’t fully decided on cupboards (to hide everything) or shelves (so I can buy all the baskets!) but if I do decide to go with cupboards I might have to “cheat” a little bit. Since we had cupboards there before and they were ruined in our water damage, I’ll exclude the cost of replacing them.

I’ve also never put up any décor any here and that’ll be on my to do list for this challenge! This is what it looks like right now without any storage and …

these are the cupboards and shelves that used to hang above the washer and dryer.

Now let’s take a peek at something a little prettier…

One of my absolute favorite parts of this room are these beautiful lockers my husband built. They are hands down one of this best builds ever. Our kids and I each have a space to hang our coats, backpacks, purses and then the drawers hold boots and shoes. The baskets above them hold all kinds of things and keep stuff out of sight.

Just so you can better picture the room, these lockers are to the left as soon as you come into our laundry room (it’s a long and narrow-ish room). Right after that wall you see beside the lockers are the washer and dryer. It’s so hard to get a good picture of it all!

Since I love making lists here’s my to do one for this challenge:

  • Build and install shelves or cabinets above washer and dryer.
  • Add shiplap (if budget allows). I’m determined not to go over a single penny. 🙂
  • Add décor…. including making a DIY farmhouse sign for this room.

This doesn’t look too bad but I also realize I’m a week behind so the pressure’s on friends, but I think we can do it!!! If you have any suggestions let me know please! I’m all ears!!!

Be sure to see all the other ladies taking part this month!!
